This Asahi Pentax S1a Black, serial number 552315, is a beautiful example of Pentax's early SLR heritage. Introduced in 1962 as a more affordable companion to the Pentax SV, it played an important role in the development that ultimately led to the legendary Spotmatic series.
The camera features the rarer black finish, which is considerably less common than the standard chrome models and therefore highly desirable among Pentax collectors today.
A particularly attractive feature is the original clip-on exposure meter mounted on top of the prism. This accessory provided photographers with convenient exposure readings while preserving the clean mechanical design of the camera, and complete sets are increasingly sought after by collectors.
The S1a itself is a fully mechanical 35mm SLR that requires no batteries for operation. It offers shutter speeds from 1 second to 1/500 second, including a hidden 1/1000 second setting and Bulb mode, reflecting the robust engineering standards of early Japanese SLR design.
Its M42 screw mount provides access to one of the largest selections of vintage lenses ever produced, particularly the legendary Takumar series that helped establish Pentax's global reputation.
With its all-metal construction, smooth operation, and original meter attachment, this black S1a remains both a practical film camera and an important collectible from the golden age of mechanical photography.
