Atelier – Stephan Vanfleteren

In Atelier, Belgian photographer Stephan Vanfleteren brings together twelve years of work created in his own studio. Against the recurring backdrop of grey theatre curtains, he explores the beauty and meaning of people, animals and objects, photographed in natural daylight or artificial light. Famous personalities and anonymous subjects, from an old fisherman to musician Nick Cave, are portrayed with equal attention and intensity. Still lifes, fragile animals and bodies in motion also feature in this diverse collection. Through his sensitivity to light, texture and detail, Vanfleteren draws on the tradition of classical painting while remaining true to his distinctive photographic style. The book includes text contributions by Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer and Stephan Vanfleteren and was published by Hannibal Books in 2023.
