It was the first of a line of cameras to become known as the Yashica J series (not to be confused with the Yashica J rangefinder)
The Penta J series succeeded the Pentamatic series of cameras, the main revision of which was the use of a standard M42 screw-lens mount in place of the Pentamatic's own mount. The shutter release is quite low on the front of the body.
Japanese advertisements of the time suggest that the name 'J' was chosen to reflect the English word 'Jaguar', although this connection appears only in contemporary Japanese advertisements
The serial number of the camera is 737992
The lens is a Yashica auto Yashinon lens f = 5 cm 1: 2 with serial number 318162
